2019 Hyundai Sonata NH

Summed up by industry experts at Edmunds, as “Restyled and upgraded, the 2019 Hyundai Sonata is still a top mid-sized sedan,” there is much to applaud about the latest Sonata model.

Sporting a refreshed exterior and interior, the new Sonata offers optimal ride quality and responsiveness, thanks to its enhanced suspension and steering. Available in seven trim levels, ranging from the ultimate in affordability to an abundance of bells and whistles, space and comfort connects them all.

The starting MSRPs reflect this range, with new Sonatas starting at $20,550 and topping $32,450.

Along with impressive standard features, regardless of trim level, including rear cross-traffic alert and lane change assistance, blind-spot detection, enhanced headlights featuring LED, as opposed to the old HID/xenon lights. Some might miss the available panoramic sunroof; however, the decision to reduce its size to something more conventional concerned better fuel economy and overall weight reduction.

Representing the Hyundai motto of, “New Thinking, New Possibilities,” consumers looking for a segment-leading sedan would do well to consider the 2019 Hyundai Sonata.

All-New Performance for an All-New Generation

When it comes to choice, Hyundai provides more than enough with respect to engine options. The first of the three is the 2.4-liter, capable of 185 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque; the second comes from a turbocharged 2.0-liter, generating 245 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque; the turbocharged 1.6-liter rounds out the three, returning 178 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque.

Backed by Hyundai’s 10-year powertrain warranty, Sonata drivers can enjoy confidence behind the wheel, regardless of engine preference.

Depending on trim level and engine, the 2019 Sonata is paired to either a six-speed automatic transmission (SE, SEL, Sport, Limited), the new eight-speed automatic transmission (2.0T trims), or the dual-clutch, seven-speed automatic, reserved exclusively for the Eco variant.

Incredible Variety of Trims

After the choice of three engines, drivers will have to consider which of the seven trims best suits their driving needs and preferences. Each one is capable, safe, and comfortable, but the more upscale features and levels of luxury increase as you move up the line.

Considered by expert reviewers as the best Sonata interior yet seen, the 2019 model makes excellent use of quality materials throughout the cabin. Controls and knobs are accessible and easy to operate.

The ride quality is quiet, smooth, and comfortable from any seat. Head, leg, and elbow room are all more than adequate, especially with respect to the rest of the segment, even for those drivers and passengers who tend toward the taller side.

SE

Though still the entry-level Sonata, this year’s SE represents a boost over last year’s base. Standard equipment is impressive, with the SE boasting features like: power locks and windows, power-folding mirrors, automatic headlights, cruise control, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a six-speaker sound system - supported by Bluetooth, auxiliary jacks and USB ports - a 7-inch touchscreen, rearview camera - featuring rear cross-traffic alert and blind-spot monitoring, and capability for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

Eco

For the meager fee of $600, drivers can take one step up the trim ladder and opt for the Eco model, featuring the same equipment as the SE, with the exception of the engine.

SEL

Brand new to the Sonata roster, the SEL ups the ante with respect to style; however, it still comes equipped with the standard engine. Provided that’s enough power, drivers who choose the SEL will enjoy features like LED daytime running lights, heated mirrors, keyless entry and ignition, leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated seats up front, hands-free smart trunk, 4.2-inch color computer, featuring satellite and HD radio, 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, and USB port for backseat passengers.

Another included and useful feature comes from Hyundai’s own Blue Link telematics - a subscription-based service, complimentary for three years of ownership. An optional Tech Package offers additional assistance in the form of automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and lane keeping assist.

Sport

Next up, and for something more in line with those looking to strike a sportier entrance, the Hyundai Sport has a style all its own. Between the rear diffuser, front grille, chrome-tipped exhaust, and chrome rocker panels, there is no doubt that this Sonata stands out. Sure, it’s smaller than last year’s panoramic version, but the Sport’s power sunroof is a nice touch, and the flat-bottom steering wheel supported by paddle shifters adds to the athletic feel. Not to mention the leather sport seats, featuring cloth inserts, complemented by a leather-wrapped shifter and Sport-exclusive trim details throughout the cabin.

Limited

Keeping only the sunroof, the Limited enhances the Sonata experience with LED lighting up front and in back, along with full leather seats, an automatic-dimming rearview mirror, driver memory settings, dual climate control, ventilation for the front seats - one of which is a six-way power seat for the passenger, and woodgrain detailing throughout.

Take it up a notch with the Ultimate Package, featuring lane keep assist, automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, rear parking sensors, electronic parking brake with automatic hold, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control - including stop-start functionality. Creature comforts and convenience are abundant, including wireless charging for smartphones, a heated steering wheel, high-end audio system, window shades in back, 8-inch touchscreen with navigation.

Sport 2.0T

Flexing a bit harder than the Sport model, the Sport 2.0T offers a stronger engine mated to the new eight-speed automatic transmission. Also, expect sport-tuned everything from steering to suspension, in addition to 18-inch wheels, and enhanced brakes.

Limited 2.0T

This is for drivers who want everything afforded by the Sport 2.0T, along with any and all features found on “lesser” trims. This is the everything-but-the-kitchen sink Sonata.

World-Class Safety

Although the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has yet to evaluate the 2019 Hyundai Sonata, it is important to note that last year’s Sonata garnered the agency’s highest distinction of Top Safety Pick+. Given the carry-over and refinement of existing equipment, there is no reason to worry that this year’s Sonata will fail to carry the same torch.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has tested the Sonata and awarded the sedan its top rating of five stars, overall. No doubt, the advanced safety equipment, like Blind Spot with Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Lane Keep Assistance, and Smart Cruise Control with Stop-Start technology informed this rating.

Drivers and passengers will also feel confident, courtesy of safety support provided by the antilock brakes, along with the side-mounted and rear airbags.
