2019 Hyundai Elantra vs. 2018 Hyundai Elantra

Some years, automakers release a new model and you can barely tell the difference from the current offering. Other years, you feel like you?re looking at a totally new car. The 2019 Hyundai Elantra may not seem like a totally new car ? it has the recognizable quality for which the Elantra is known ? but it has received major updates that make it feel exciting and fresh.

It?s a great time to shop for a Hyundai Elantra. The 2018 models are still on the lots, and the 2019 models are starting to arrive. You have your choice between two exceptional and affordable sedans. Here?s a closer look at how the 2019 Hyundai Elantra and the 2018 model compare to help you make a better choice:

Exterior Changes

Look straight on at the 2019 Hyundai Elantra and you?ll notice the most significant changes. Instead of the typical, hexagonal grille, you will see an angular grille with a vaguely hexagonal shape that is indented by the jutting headlights. The triangular headlights come to a sharp point at a downward angle just inside the top of the grille. The new grille is also much wider than the old one, creating a more open look.

The severity of the headlights is accented by a row of running lights around the tops and sides ? almost like a pair of menacing eyebrows. Meanwhile, fog lights positioned just under the headlights are similarly sharply angled, cutting into the bottom of the grille slightly.

At the profile view, the all-new Elantra looks mostly the same, with some minor changes that only the discerning viewer will notice. However, there are new wheel designs for the 15-, 16-, and 17-inch options, including one with split spokes.

The rear view has similar changes to the front. The tail lights angle down sharply, pointing far into the trunk. Meanwhile, the tail lights are flanked by two LED strips that run parallel to each other, and the rear bumper has a more interesting look. The bumper now has an angular black design that shoots up from the middle.

Overall, the 2019 Elantra has a more detailed design for a more aggressive and interesting look. You may enjoy the more conservative design of the 2018 model, or you may find the 2019 refresh to be invigorating and exciting.

Interior Updates

The all-new Hyundai Elantra gets some updates on the interior, as well, though they aren?t as dramatic as the exterior changes. Most notably, the center stack has been given a refresh, with changes like three large knobs inside the panel for the HVAC, as well as different switches and buttons for other features. The vents for the HVAC system have also been redesigned, and now there are rectangular designs in the vents thanks to the intersection of metallic accents. The vents also have new trim.

A new infotainment system is featured in the 2019 Elantra, and a larger, 8-inch touchscreen is offered as an option. The base model comes with a 5-inch touchscreen, and higher trim levels come with a 7-inch touchscreen. The navigation system has been updated with a bird?s eye view, as well as data provided by HD radio ? even when drivers don?t have a subscription.

The gauges on the dash have been redesigned, and they are topped by a new hood design. The faces on the gauges now have a checker pattern, and the gauges for fuel and coolant temperature have been moved.

Performance Differences

There are no performance differences with the new Hyundai Elantra. When you have a great powertrain, why change it?

The new Elantra will come with the same engine as the 2018 model: A 2.0-liter four-cylinder that puts out 147 horsepower. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, but the upper trim levels offer a six-speed automatic as an option.

The Eco trim level will continue to offer a 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine that puts out 128 horsepower. The engine is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

You?ll continue to enjoy smooth handling and great fuel efficiency no matter what trim level you choose.

Safety

Safety is the other area where the new Hyundai Elantra gets the most updates. Unfortunately, the previous model was not competitive in terms of safety features, so the automaker made some needed improvements with the 2019 model.

Starting with the SEL trim level, the 2019 Elantra comes with blind spot monitoring, a driver attention monitor, lane keep assist, and forward automatic braking ? the latter two of which were only available on the Limited trim in last year?s model, and then only as an optional upgrade.

Adaptive cruise control is still an optional upgrade, and only for the Limited trim. The same is true for forward pedestrian detection. Safe Exit Assist is also optional, which alerts people if a vehicle is approaching when they open the door.

Which is Right for You?

The 2019 Hyundai Elantra starts at just $17,985, which is only $150 more than the suggested starting price for the 2018 Elantra. You?ll get more distinctive styling and more features in the 2019 Elantra, but you won?t pay much more for it. However, you may prefer the more conservative styling of the 2018 model and opt for package upgrades to get those additional features that you like.

The best thing you can do to decide between the 2019 and the 2018 Elantra is to visit a Hyundai dealership and look at the two models side-by-side. Taking a test drive should prove the same since the powertrains are identical. However, you can get a feel for the features in action, or you can try them out at the dealership.

You can?t go wrong with either model year for the Hyundai Elantra. It?s a stylish sedan that has some great features, and you can get it for an affordable price that will fit into most budgets. Visit your Hyundai dealership to discover sales specials and financing offers that will make the Elantra even more affordable.
